How do you start a home based business?
** This depends on where you live and what it is you want to do. In most parts of the United States some sort of license is required to own and operate most businesses. It could be a vendor license, a business license or other sort of permit. Some home businesses may not require anything more than registering your business name with the city or county government you live in.
You need to check with your local government or City Hall to be sure you are doing the right thing. Most local governments have a department that issues business licenses. If the government pages of the phone book don't list business licenses then just call the main number for your city, township or county government office (sometimes called City Hall or Administrator) and tell them you want information about obtaining a business licence.
If you plan to operate under any name other than your own, some areas require that you obtain a business name alias check first. This may be done through your local court clerk or other office.
If you rent your home or apartment, the landlord may require that you get his/her permission before you start any business in the residence... especially if you will be having clients come to the home.
Do you need to have a business background or even a degree in business? Or should you?
** Although a business background, training and education sure won't hurt you, there are people that earn a nice living working from home that have none of that. If you have a skill and the desire, you can teach yourself what you need to know.
Lots of information can be obtained from the Internet. Also look for a state run program called Cooperative Extension System. They normally hold small business seminars at least once a quarter and usually operate out of County Government offices or a State College/University. You can find out more about them here:

Is a lot of money needed to begin one?
** You can start a business with not much more than a computer and an idea, which you may already have. It just depends on what it is you want to do.
What types are good to start/look into?
** Any business you are passionate about is a good business to look into starting. Here are just a few ideas that I personally know have been successful for people in my personal or business life:
