An invoice is just an itemized statement. An invoice number is something you make up like the numbers on checks. You can use the year 07001, 07002, 07003, etc or just start at 1001 and keep going.
Customers usually give you an order number that you put on the invoice. You also put the terms (or when you want to be paid) on the invoice.

You must have access to microsoft word if you have access to the internet.
Set up a document on MS Word, save it as a template then just make the necessary alterations to it every time you do a new invoice.
To do the invoice you need to write your name and address and tel no at the top of the page, do it bold and centred.
Then underneath put the name and address of who you are invoicing.
Under that put todays date and inv no.
Under that put detail, i.e. your services, date carried out, etc.
You keep a record of your invoices on the PC, that way you know what the last number was. If this is your first invoice start with 1 and just go from there.

Hi,
I am also self employed. I use the date method as suggested by someone else. If you quoted for the contract you could tie this into your invoice.

The simplest way is just to get yourself one of those duplicate books from the stationers. Simply write your name and address, the date and details of what you are charging for. Keep it simple. If you charge VAT you will need to break this down on the invoice and write the VAT number somewhere on the sheet. The numbering is fairly academic and is really only for the benefits of tracing either by you or the customer - most of these duplicate books will come ready numbered on the top right hand side.
Alternatively you could design something on excel or word.
If you need any further help email me and I might be able to send you an example.
Good luck!

Microsoft Office has templates that you can use. A simple software package like Sage Instant Accounts or QuickPro would give you sequential invoice numbering, plus you can put your clients in and keep good financial records.

Use quickbooks simple start software program. It will design and print invoices for you, you can put in the computer what has been paid, and print reports for accounts due. It would be perfect for your business and it is easy to set up. Quickbooks also has an online website where you can access your books from anywhere in the world. That is the edition I use for my business.

You want an order no from contractor stating terms and dates.
