Do any of the starter kits work? I have no experience, any advice?

Start by cleaning your house. If there is anything you are willing to sell, check to see if there have been sales lately. (Listing something nobody wants is a waste of money.)

Pack the item up. Figure out how much is it will cost to send. Buyers like fixed shipping prices and you don't want to lose money by guessing.

Have the item almost ready to ship. Many buyer pay by using paypal and expect their item to be mailed with 1-2 days after paying. (And the sooner they get their item, they are more likely to leave positive feedback.)

After you've listed a few items review the time and effort it took to sell. Even if you don't continue, you will have learned something and cleared a few shelves in your home. Since personal items are generally sold at a loss, you may not even have a tax issue. (If you sell personal items at a gain, it goes on the 1040 schedule D.)

Only after you have some experience should you start buying items for resale...and so many people dropship, it's not a guaranteed way to make money.
