Research, plan, research, plan. There is a ton of free support for new businesses. Bank of America had a new business model planning guide that was fantastic. It helps you go through all the steps of starting a new business from market plans, to financing to location to product! You might be able to get your hands on their booklets at any branch or whichever bank is going to be doing your financing.
The AARP and other groups have mentoring programs where retired successful business owners will give you insight and advice on the steps they went through in starting and running their businesses. Nothing like getting help from people who have been there! Their services are free as a general rule.
How is your product or service unique? Is your pricing competitive with other business who provide similar services? How will you market and advertise your business? 9 out of 10 businesses fail within the first 3 years for no other reason than they failed to advertise! That should be an expenditure as critical as rent and payroll!
Have you called/ visited/ researched your competitors within your marketing area? How will you differentiate your business from theirs? What strategies have you designed that will encourage your clients to do business with you more often, refer their friends and family to your business, increase the amount they spend each visit by offering products or services that are different from your primary lines but complement it?
Most businesses do not break even in the first 12-18 months. Do you have enough capitalization to make it through that period?
I think that personal passion and committment are the main ingredient for success. Loving what you do and being willing to do whatever it takes is a primary ingredient in success and it sounds like you have that. Surround yourself with like minded people and you cannot help but succeed!
Congratulations and best of luck to you!
