What would be a good number of items to list on a new auction site?

Hi. I recently started a new auction site. The next step is to add products to the site to get is started. My question is: What would be a good number of products to put on it? I want to put enough on to be able to show that there is variety but not so many that it is overwhelming. Also, are there particular categories that I should put more items in than others?
