I know how to develop websites/ applications etc.
Is it a realistic expectation for me to make say a dating website, host it free on google app-engine, include some as-sense ads. Then sit back. Could I expect to make a comfortable income doing this? I know i could(probably) make money getting a proper job but i think this could be an interesting venture.

Yes you can make money. Becoming independently wealthy is a bit harder. You will be competing against a large amount of other very good sites trying to do the same, including mine at http://www.virtualcupid.net. There is a lot of work involved, you can 'just sit back' but in order to have a good site, you need to maintain it and add interesting content for your members. You can also do this on a very small budget if you have some coding skills as you say. Setting up a web server is fairly trivial for those who know how. This way you are looking at the cost of a good domain name, and dns services.

Yes, it is very ambitious, but that is what is required for any good idea. I enjoy working on my site, and find it rewarding in that way. I like providing a service that people actually use as well. Will I get rich? Well, thats part of the fun, you don't really know until you try.

Some of the negative answers you've received are kind of lame. If you feel something is worth trying, go for it. Keeping your skills current could lead you to another idea that no one else has thought of yet, increasing you're shot at something cool. That's the beauty of the net, everyone has a chance to create something great.

You're very ambitious. The only problem with this is the fact that this is the 21's century. There are billions of websites out there, so much in fact, that the chances of someone visiting it is almost impossible.
