Is it possible for a 20 year old to retrain as a Plumber?

Right now I work as a Systems Administrator and though I enjoy my job I'm only on an average salary £20,000 per year and I've often dreamed of the fact of running my own business and though plumbing would be a good place to start as I had experience of this when i first left school (worked with my grandad for a few weeks before getting the job I've got now)

Can you offer any advice or information on how I could go about training and is there anything in particular that I should know? I'm in central scotland which means that I'd probably prefer the vacancies to come from there!! not nationwide though information on that would be helpful too!!

Thank you in advance

blimey at 20 you make it sound like your life is over, look into doing course, maybe try open university, as they often have more then one set day for enrolling, that way for the most part you should be able to study while you work, so that you still have money, otherwise your other option would be to wait until next september and find a college that is doing a plumbing course, tho this may mean cutting down your hours of work, as you made need to go on an appretiship whilst on the course, good luck tho, and no at the age 20 you are not to old haha you are never too old ;-)

Honey....It is never too late to retrain for anything. I am 44 and was run over by an Suv 3 times so I can no longer be a nurse which I have done for 15 years. In fact I can do nothing that requires being on my feet for a whole shift, which is the kind of work I know. So I am currently going to school online to retrain as a teacher. I do not know if you can retrain as a plummer online....I would not even dare to guess because I would of never guessed I could do teaching online. I am from the US and we have community colleges that offer that instruction. I have no idea what you have in Scootland. Or do an internet search for starting a new career and I promise your phone will ring immediately. Then you can find out if you can retrain online.

You probably already know this, but once you learn the trade and start your own business, you can make mega money. That is how it is in the US anyway. Hope I helped.... Kathy

Of course you can train even if you are 103 there is no stopping you, i run my husbands plumbing business, its been hard work but worth it, the best advise i can give you is contact the local plumber business and ask if they would take you as an apprentice, its worth a shot.

All the best !

No, 20 is by no means too old, and plumbers are much in demand. Go for it!

Although your local jobcentre's main concern is getting people off the dole, they should be able to tell you how to get the training you need, or else to refer you to an agency which could help.

No offence, but 20 is soooo young, so don't worry, just get the training. I wish I had learned a trade at 20, it would have been so handy in the times when work has been scarce.

my husband (soon to be ex) just went back to plumbing and is currently going back to plumbing school and he is 29 years old. Follow your dreams and don't let anyone tell you that you can't!! Good luck!

I changed careers at almost 40 so as long as you want to do it then go for it.
