The scams are the exception, not the rule.
I have been involved with affiliate marketing for almost 2 years now and I have worked with a lot of honest and quality affiliate marketing programs.
My recommendation for anyone starting with affiliate marketing would be to join SFI. It is one of the biggest, oldest and most reputable affiliate programs out there. Around 1000 people join it every day and it has one of the biggest online stores with 1000's of affiliate products to sell.
It's free and you can check it out here:

Absolutely Definitely. There are many more good ethical affiliate programs than scams.
Sometimes affiliate programs get a reputation of being a scam because of the lure of earning big bucks over the Internet. People presume that it is easy and when it doesn't happen for them they automatically start telling anyone who will listen that its a scam. Ninety nine times out of a hundred though, that affiliate has not put in the time to even learn the basics of affiliate marketing.
Affiliate marketing isn't rocket science but it has to be learnt just like any other business or job. Its also an ever changing business so you need to keep changing with it and learning new techniques.
Try looking around for good affiliate training resources. Here is a free one, http://www.leadsleap.com/go/18623. There are many good resources around and can be very helpful in deciding on how you are going to market products as well finding products and programs to sell.
Good luck.

There are many that are not scams, but it requires you to put in some serious work to make money.
I am an affiliate of Allposters.com. I administer a movie theatre web site and we include links to all the movie posters from our site and whenever someone orders after being directed from our site, we receive a commission. Unfortunately the commission is minimal.
Amazon.com used to have an affiliates program, but I don't know if they still do.
The best way to build an affiliates site is to make a web site based on your interests and then try to tie it into a reputable e-tailer that sells related products. But in order to make any real money, you have to create a site that actually draws traffic.

Most affiliates are as honest as any business. How honest you think that is... Seriously, I've personally never been ripped off. You should start with the bigger ones who have reputations to uphold and move to more lucrative ones, if you find them, from there. A software that incorporates some of the biggest programs that allows you to build sites very easily if you are a beginner is www.acesitecreator.com

You're right , they are not all scams.
There are genuine affiliate programs which pay good
commissions but you must do the work to promote
them in the appropriate way.
Super affiliates invariable promote residual programs
that keeping paying on renewals, once you get the customer.
