Question:
Avon? A go or no?

I'm a Pampered Chef consultant but I am serioulsy considering quitting. People are just not interested and I am not a pushy person and that's why I just can't succeed. I have been in it almost a year and I feel like it's just not a good home based business. Avon is different because you do not need to have party nor have expensive items. I need for an avon representive to tell me what the commission is like and how much the books are that you have to purchase to give to your customers. I was reading a little online on blogs and such and some people say that it's high overhead. Can you tell me what you think, serious answers only.

Avon's great. Now's not the best time to join however. That's a VERY saturated market. doesn't make good business sense to start an Avon now. The company passed its peak ages ago and the amount of work compared to the compensation is horrible. That same amount of work today in a newer company, can earn you tons more money. I'd advise against it. If you want some extra income on the side, try it for a while but don't expect too much. If you want full time income...run the other way.

I am an Avon rep. In the past I sold Country Peddler (now At Home America) and Pampered Chef. While both companies have great stuff I find that the Party Sales are just too hard. Booking parties is hard enough and then nobody shows up. People don't need tons of cooking supplies or home decorations either. I didnt do well with either one of the but I'm doing very well with Avon. Avon is something that many people can find something they need and its a consumable product which has to be replaced eventually so you will get repeat business.

I wont say it sells itself but there are many people that love Avon. You just need to find them. True story....I had lunch today and wore my Avon button and had a brochure on the table and the waitress asked "who sells Avon?" She lost her rep some time ago and hadn't found anyone new. She ordered something on the spot and said she'll be ordering more. So by having lunch and being prepared I got a new customer.

You don't need anything to sell Avon besides the brochures. Some people give their customers a gift occasionally. I usually give my new customers a lip balm with their first order. BUT you don't have too. There is no minimum order and there is no inventory required. People who do that are doing it because they choose to not because they have to. In fact its really not a good idea to stock anything because you can't really guess what people will want. You'll be stuck paying for items you may not be able to sell.

However Avon does allow returns up to a year. So if you had stuff you can't sell, either a customer changed their mind or you tried buying something to resell, you can send it back and get a refund. I tell everyone who signs up all you need are brochures and some basic stationary supplies.

Take it from me! I use to sell AVON and I stopped. I still buy tons of their products and love them but I would never sell it again. Every two weeks a new book comes out with all the same stuff as the last book. I am curious to know why you would leave a wonderful company like The Pampered Chef to sell AVON? I just started selling the Pampered Chef and I love it!!! I have never been so happy with a decision that I have made. Eventhough I just started the PC I know that if I work hard it will bring me great success. Now if I may ask- why don't you change the direction you are heading- There is no such thing as being to pushy if you do it correctly. Always be polite and offer something else is a no is presented. Just my thought but if you want you PC business to work it will be possible! Stick with it!!!!

Assess how many regular buyers you think you would have. How much do you like the product? You really have to like the product in order to sell it. Maybe you could have Mark on hand for younger buyers......Now the $$$$: don't believe the tax benefit hype. Deducting business expenses is simply a matter of principle. A basic concept where you deduct expenses incurred to produce income. Also, unless you feel confident preparing a schedule C and supporting schedules, your annual cost of tax preparation will increase if you seek professional service. You might try a do-it-yourself program like H&R Block Tax Cut or Turbo Tax. Avon can be a good supplemental income. If you go ahead with it, keep a milage record in your car of all business trips if you start to travel for any Avon related business. Also keep good records on a consistent basis of all business related activity. Good luck, whatever you decide.

Go to some other forums, like; ryze.com or myspace.com or even mywahmspace.com (my favorite - they are work at home moms).

Type in the word Avon, and you'll probably find a lot of ladies in the business. If you talk to someone who has no financial incentive for YOU to join Avon, you'll probably get the real truth and find out if it will work for you.

With Pampered Chef, you were probably interested in cooking, right? Well, with Avon, you'd need to be somewhat of a consultant for women and their beauty needs. I know that I usually need a consultant to tell me their honest opinion - cause I don't always know what looks good on me - I'm not sure that most women really do.

Good Luck, and maybe I'll see you on the forums!

if you aren't the pushy type then selling anything really isn't a good idea. I tried Avon for a while but had to quit because I wasn't making any money, and spending on books and crap. Plus most people I know already get Avon from someone else. it's very hard to break into.

I have been in your shoes and have spent many hours online researching and trying to find the right one. The one thing that I ended up figuring out is that there are no true work from home "jobs." In a work from home job you usually start out working for a company and then for whatever reason, sometimes, the company will let you take your job home; thus work from home job.

However, there are many work from home “opportunities.” These opportunities provide you with the vehicle to work from home and build your own business. The difficult or frustrating part about finding the right opportunity is that there are many offers that are not legitimate, but scams. Theses scams make it difficult for the companies that truly offer a legitimate opportunity to work from home. Usually, work from home opportunities have a small investment to start your own business. These are okay as long as they are around $100, anything much more than that and I would stay away. Also if they require a monthly overhead to run the business it should include things like your websites, training, back office system, and support. Remember any business that you start and want to continue (whether it’s retail, restaurant, or home-based) will always have start up costs and monthly expenses.

I am a stay at home mother of 2 (ages 4 and 2). My husband works 6 days a week and I do not have much help in the area of child care for my children. On my journey to finding the right work from home opportunity I tried everything from selling vitamins, lotions and many other product based companies. I also looked into processing information online. What I realized with all these companies is that I usually put more money back into my business and ended up with lots of product I really did not need. I also was very skeptical of some of those online work from home websites that really never got to the point of what I would be doing to earn income.

Finally, I was given information on a legitimate work from home company. At first I was very skeptical and paid no attention to the information. Then one day my mother needed to have some dental work done but had no insurance. I remembered that I had some information on discount dental plans. Once I researched the information I had been given, I realized that I could provide my mother with a way to pay less for her procedure and earn an income for signing her onto the discount dental plan. I have been with the company since and am on the fast track toward building a residual income.

I work 15 hours a week (give or take a few) for a National Discount Medical Benefits Company. The company has been in business for over 16 years and is continuing to expand! We have been featured on "60 minutes", "The New York Times", "Wall Street Journal", "Time Magazine", and "American Medical Review" as one of the most reputable, legitimate home based companies. We are members of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the National Association of Dental Plans and the owner of the company sits on the board of The Consumer Health Alliance, which we are also a part of their membership.

Our company addresses the number one problem in US, which is that 70% of Americans can't afford or can't get health insurance for whatever reason. We are an alternative for people who are suffering with their health because of this issue. Now to work for our company you don't have to know everything there is to know about Health Care. Our company will train you on how to communicate our services to those who need it. We have over 2 million members that use our plans and save money on their health care.

When you work for the company you are able to set your own hours and build a residual income while you work. Because we get paid month after month, year after year for the work we do our income is always increasing and we get paid even when we don’t work. The company also does not enforce a monthly quota, which was important to me. I wanted to have the flexibility to work when I wanted and how much I wanted. Of course the more you put into your business the more income you will receive.

Some of the benefits we offer are 401k, direct deposit, life insurance and a family benefit package for your entire household. The next best thing is there is no cold calling, telemarketing, stocking of inventory, collecting of payments, and no home parties! This was very important to me as I had the child care issue to deal with and wanted to be able to stay home and work without having to leave my house.

Another great thing about our company is that we all work together to as a team. We are not out to compete with our fellow representatives. Whenever I need advice my team is there to help me to be a success. This was also very important as I was new to the business and wanted the team support you get working a 9-5 job without having to work the 9-5 job. I have also made many friends along the way and still have the interaction with adults while taking care of my children at home.

I guess I could go on and on about what we do and how we get paid, but the best thing for you to do is research the company for yourself and determine if it is right for you.
